The strange things that happen....

Today I had 2 odd phone calls:

1. Friends called to invite me for drinks after their hockey game. NOT field hockey- but ICE hockey. Nairobi has one of the only ice rinks in Sub Saharan Africa. Apparently there is a hockey league here. Glenn- you could maybe make a trade from your Edmonton team to Kenya :)

2. My friend Ben called me to ask me if I was free Friday and Saturday to be in a commerical. Apparently they need mzungo (white) women. I had to decline as I have meetings all day tomorrow and then head to Lamu on Saturday- but would have been a lot of fun I think.

I will now STOP complaining about the rain

...my poor Calgary friends... although thank God I left when I did or the complaints of this would have been endless.

Odds n' Ends of Life/Friends/Trips

This past weekend made me realize that no matter where you move in the world there is always a feeling of home when you are with your friends.

On Saturday 4 of us girls spent 6 hours at the spa being pampered for a fraction of the price you would pay in North America. It was ideal- pedicure/manicure/facial/massage. We then went off to eat out a great Lebanese restaurant followed by meeting more friends out a couple of clubs. It was one of those evenings where you don't want to be anywhere else but with your friends.

Sunday evening we hosted 3 friends for supper- it was a classic Canadian meal- encompassing all of the ethinicities. Indian, Mexican, and Chinese food- it was delicious.

Trips!!

Lamu is this coming weekend- so excited about some beach time. Next weekend the plan is to hike Mount Kenya!! I believe we will be gone for 4 days- hiking to various huts along the path and eventually reaching the summit. We are still working out the logisitics but sounds like it will be a go!

Emily arrives at Christmas and the plan is to go on Safari for 3 nights and 4 days- really looking forward to that since I haven't had the chance to do the official safari as of yet.

January marks the BIG trip! Emily and I will fly to New Delhi to then meet up with Roland's River India company along the river bordering Tibet and India. We will be river rafting for 10 days. It will be the first North American expedition and we are totally excited about this!! It will be the first time I have been on the river with Roland- even though way-back-when I helped him study for his first river rafting safety test.
...................
Heading out for Ethiopian food tonight which seems to be my latest favorite- still having the vegetarian option, as Ethiopian meat is served.... RAW.... yikes.

More throughout the week!

You know you are working for an NGO when....

The report the CFO has to write has been delayed, meaning funders won't release funds, meaning- no toilet paper in the building til the end of the month, and no sugar for tea. The office is divided between what is more important TP or sugar- I am more interested in the TP personally. Lize has been singing the oldies song "Sugar sugar" all morning so I guess we can all find humor in this!

...........................

Tomorrow is SPA DAY!! Tia, myself, Lize, and Dana have booked a 4 hour spa day at a spa in town. We will be getting manicures/pedicures/massages/facials! We are all pretty excited about it!! I believe the morning will start off with pancakes and Canadian maple syrup (yes, we found it!) and then we are off for relaxation and spa treatment. We feel like it is much deserved after the conference.

Because Lamu has been postponed, the weekend is fairly free which is nice for a change since work has been incredibly busy. Also, the sun is finally shining after days and days of freakin' rain! And I am not talking about Vancouver style rain either. Finall... laundry can be done (outside hanging) and mud can stop caking my shoes.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and my American buds have had a great Thanksgiving!!! Enjoy turkey and football.

Pictures from the Conference

Well been working 10 days straight now- thanks to the conference! It was a huge success and I was glad to be a part of it...but needless to say am exhausted at this moment. Attached are some pictures from the conference.

Unfortunately our trip to Lamu has been postponed one week because Sandra is very sick with typhoid- I tell ya the diseases you get in Africa!! So Lamu the weekend of the 1st!

..............................

When I walk from the gym to work in the morning I always pass by a vegetable and tea stand that is run by two women- who are always smiling. The other day as I was walking by, I saw the two women sitting beside the curb with their heads in their hands as they watched construction men tear down their stands. It was awful. These women have been established there for 3 years and because there are new apartments going up their entire livelihood was taken away. I wonder what they will do now? And as Teagan and Sara say "where does the good go?"

a British rendition of my evening at the Oxford/Cambridge Society dinner..by Sandra Rowden

2 nice youngish ladies, dressed up in their finery get in a taxi and arrive at the Muthaiga (Golf) Club. One slight wrong turn en route down a mud track, but it all adds to the excitement.

The venue looks very promising indeed and the ladies are invited to go upstairs to the ballroom.
Beautiful flowers everywhere and a very welcoming party sound. 2 rooms crammed full of people – mainly tasty and quite fit looking men – and a chocolate fountain as you went in.( Men and chocolate = heaven). Almost immediately a very gorgeous man comes up and welcomes us ( hellloooooo Kareem, the young ladies think to themselves, this is so much better than we hoped for….) He’s swiftly followed by another, plying us with free drinks. (men + chocolate+ alcohol = heaven). But what’s this, wait a moment, surely not a ballroom? A moment of realisation, and oh no, this is a golf promotion party, not the Oxford and Cambridge Dinner which is at the Country Club. Great disappointment, and although we are invited to stay we decide to do the honourable British thing and be on our way. First mistake of the evening, I’d say. We did finish our drinks first, of course.

So, taxi comes back, and after a couple of aborted attempts down dead ends, and a more serious attempt to deposit us at the Goods entrance, the young ladies make it to the Muthaiga Country Club.

A quite promising group of fun looking folk are going in so we follow, fortified by our free drinkies. We go into a very nice room, with a bar, always a good sign and look round to see who to make conversation with. But oh no, for the second time in an hour, what’s that cake with 25 on it doing in here, when it’s the 80th anniversary dinner. Why is everyone looking at us? So this isn’t the Oxford and Cambridge Society dinner then? Swift exit through door at end of room..looking a little pinker than when we entered…

Not to be outdone we ask for directions and after a hike through the undergrowth (Sandra wearing satin evening shoes with beads sewn on them, and this is the rainy season) we reach the ballroom. Sadly we are the only people to have reached the ballroom.
We then have to re hike to another room where the AGM is taking place. As the ladies are almost an hour late they peer through the door, noting the blue rinses, and decide to sit outside and fortify themselves with a G and T, in preparation for what suddenly doesn’t look like such a fun evening. But what’s this? Not a Club Member Madam? Oh really we don’t accept anything as vulgar as money here. You can’t buy a drink.

A little sulking goes on, whilst the ladies look round at the others who also didn’t make it on time. It’s so not promising, that suddenly they wonder if a total rebellion is on the cards. More people arrive, most of whom have difficulty walking unaided. Suddenly the ladies can stand it no more and with another quick peek in the room confirming their worst fears that surely this must be the over eighties anniversary dinner, not the eightieth anniversary dinner, they do a runner. Hiding in a bar near Reception whilst they wait for their taxi, Sandra becomes Barbara , Babs for short, just in case the organiser passes by… The naughty girlies are offered another drink, and despite the fact that Amanda is looking very fit in a short dress with lots of white leg flashing around, we cannot have a drink in that bar either as we are Not Members. As I text the organiser to give our apologies, we are then almost evicted from the premises, because we don’t tolerate those evil mobile phones in here, thank you very much Madam..

So, looking our most glam we eat at the Osteria and have a few drinkies at Casablanca…..

We are wondering how to get an invite back to the Golf Club, mind you….

I am an ExPat Snob

Well it is official I am an ExPat snob. I have a cleaning lady who comes twice a week- she does the laundry, ironing, cleans the bathrooms, polishes the floors, cleans the kitchen, etc. She is super nice, but wasn't really living up to our (all 3 of us) expectations. Our complaints were pretty picky- so picky in fact that I won't even write them down because you will think I am nuts. Anyways I had to go back to the house today to talk to her about making some changes. I felt like such a snob going in there and telling her ways to improve her work, etc... but I guess at the end of the day I have to consider it a "performance review" more than anything... right??

So hopefully things will work out a bit better. I know everyone back home is rolling their eyes at this posting as each and everyone of us wishes we had cleaning ladies- so yes, I know that I am fortunate to be able to do that here. Let me tell you- it makes living with roommates SO MUCH EASIER! Never have to worry about who cleans what- that is a huge plus. Ok will stop bragging now.

........................................

Learned a new term this week- apparently restaraunts and bars that mainly host mzungos (whites) are known as "Out of Africa" locations. I did not know this when a friend and I went out for a drink and his response was "oh- you mean the Out of Africa place?"...

........................................
The weekend is just ahead and on Friday night I have been invited to attend a formal dinner with my friend Sandra. The dinner is being hosted at one of the poshy country clubs in town and is hosted by the Cambridge and Oxford Alumni- Sandra is an Oxford grad. I am looking forward to getting dressed up and hanging out with the Brits for an evening. Sunday is a work day unfortunately as we are hosting a conference next week and we have to be at the Hilton all day on Sunday to set up the conference sessions.

That is the short and sweet of the last couple of days! Will write more after the weekend.

...and we have hit the rainy season

Well it appears that the rainy season has come early. I don't mind the rain- in fact it is really nice- very heavy rains- similar to what you would see in any African movie. However... the issue is that there are no side walks in Kenya and therefore all the streets and side of the roads are COVERED in mud. So it is quite the adventure to get to and from work, as well as to and from the gym. On the way to the gym this morning Lize and I were discussing the corruption in Nairobi and if only the government could control the corruption, Kenya might actually have money to fix their roads and build sidewalks. That would be nice- will it happen in the 2 years that I am living here... probably not.

........................................

I had a really great weekend. Hung out with friends- went to dinner, had drinks, explored more of Nairobi nightlife. Also managed to send off the CD of photographs I took for the African-Indian cookbook. Am really looking forward to hearing the comments on the photographs and can't wait to see them published!!

Work is getting busier and busier each day. Next week we are hosting a conference at the Hilton in the city. All of the Vice Chancellors from the Partner Institutions across Africa will be attending. As of now I am responsible for the Press along with two other coworkers, who thankfully have done this before. Should be an exciting week ahead and then next weekend OFF to LAMU!! Yeah! Let's hope there is sunshine there!

Matatu Challenge

Last night was the infamous Carnivore experience. I watched friends eat crocodile, camel, ostrich, beef, lamb, etc. I say I watched because I ordered the "veggi-vore" meal as I am still mentally grappling with the idea of eating meat. I met up with a crew of UN interns at the restaraunt. They have had an eventful and fun filled week as they get to participate in the events at the Climate Change conference being held in Nairobi at the UN complex. Koffi Annan arrived yesterday so there was a big "buzz" around the complex. Interesting side note about Koffi Annan. He is from Ghana and in Ghana when children are born they are named after the day of the week they were born. "Koffi" means friday in Ghana, so really the Head of the UN is "Friday Annan". Interesting.

The dinner was really great and it was fun to meet more new people.

..............................................

So this weekend I am challenging myself to taking more Matatu's during the daylight hours. I have taken one, but was with a friend who knew all the routes, etc. and I didn't pay attention to which # we were getting on, etc. I am tired of paying for taxis, when I can get on a matatu for so much cheaper. The key to the matatu is watch your bag, your cell phone, and make sure you know where you are getting off. Dana and I and another friend have to go shopping on Saturday morning so we are going to figure out the matatu route to our favorite clothing market. Below is a picture of a matatu.

Also this weekend - another flatmate is moving in - Lize! She will be staying for one month and will be great to have another person in the house.

Have definetly noticed that I have settled into a routine here- starting to feel more at home in Nairobi. Kind of nice being in a routine and feeling like I am settled in what used to be an unfamiliar place.

Inviting myself

When living overseas I think you have to take a different approach to socializing- that is, invite yourself anywhere if you don’t have something to do and make sure you never feel bad about doing it!

Today I came into work thinking “What am I going to do tonight?” Evenings here are a bit boring if you don’t have a plan- there aren’t any shows on t.v.- well there are some, but I don’t have a t.v. guide and haven’t figured out the timings of shows, with the exception of knowing that “Seventh Heaven” is on Sunday nights at 6:00 pm- I know it is a secret-tv-like that I have !! So- I decided to send an email out to a couple of friends- well acquaintances more or less- a fellow Canadian who used to live in Calgary and was dressed as a Zebra at the infamous Halloween party- she was cool, friendly, and seemed to have a good understanding of fun things to do. So sure enough she responded with a dinner invite to a famous restaurant in town called “Carnivore”. I immediately replied “YES!”- and then realized that it is a full meat eating restaurant (hence the name) which has varieties of meat such as crocodile, zebras, buffalo, etc. The reason I am a bit hesitant on meat lately is because of the tape worm… which was as a result of bad meat. Thankfully, Carnivore has a “Veggie-vore” menu and I will eat from that.

I found the menu list on the internet and thought it was interesting and exotic! Jeff and Sean- this is definetly your kind of place!

Attack of the Killer Tape Worm

It was a bad week for updating the blog. Work was insanely busy as the project team from the BBC arrived on Tuesday and we worked quite hard until Friday afternoon. Wednesday was full day meetings and then a dinner that lasted until 2:00 am! So needless to say I was bagged by the end of the week.

But the work bit of my update is not nearly as interesting as the next bit…

All last week I had been having stomach pains and just not feeling right. On Friday afternoon I finally had to leave work to go home because my face was bright pink, I was feverish and my stomach was killing me. I managed to rest until the evening and then went out to supper with friends to welcome two new people who arrived, Dave and Stephanie. I have been in touch with Dave and Stephanie since August- we managed to get in contact via Selena. They are both working here in Nairobi and just arrived last week. So it was great to finally meet them and to introduce them to the fine Indian food available in Nairobi.

I went home directly after the dinner (still feeling ill) but couldn’t explain why my stomach ached yet I could eat about 2 portion sizes more than I normally ate. The next morning I still was not feeling well and noticed that my throat was swollen and red. I managed to get to the Doctor’s office around 11: 30 am. Brief side note- the Doctor’s office here is the ONE process chain in Kenya that is actually efficient! You see the doctor, go to the lab, get your results and are out of there within half an hour! Amazing!

So I went into the Doctor’s office explained my symptoms, had some lab tests and then came back to his office half an hour later.

When I went back into the Doctor’s office he said “So… do you know what is living in your stomach?”

My response “Umm… no” (my eyes watering, about to burst into tears at this point).

“Oh well- you seem to have a tape worm.”

In my not so subtle way I then shouted “SHUT UP!” I could not believe this!!

He said “No really, you seem to have a tape worm in your large intestine as a result of bad meat. They can grow to about 8 meters long, but I believe yours is a juvenile.”

I literally was about to throw up at this point. He assured me that by Monday it would be gone. Not only did I have a tape worm but I also had a throat infection which is why I was feverish and had a sore throat. So… was fighting two infections at once.

I was quite impressed with the Doctor here. He was very kind, sincere, and straight to the point. He said that when you live in Kenya if you feel pain anywhere in your body it is important to come immediately to see the Doctor, because unlike living in North America, you never know what it is that you have contracted.

I immediately cancelled all weekend plans and spent the rest of the weekend in bed, reading, watching movies and resting.

I am really glad that things were sorted out over the weekend as work as become very busy and am not sure I would have felt right being away from work for most of the week, so in many ways a bit of a godsend that I was able to recover over a weekend.

So that is the scoop and now you can all tell people that you have known someone who had a tapeworm, which Dana has affectionately named “Spike”.
